Hydrogen Peroxide Teeth Whitening v Sodium Bicarbonate – Which Is Best?
There are now two main types of teeth whitening kits available on the market, hydrogen peroxide teeth whitening and sodium bicarbonate teeth whitening, but which type is best for you?
This article will explore the various options available to you so you can decide which is best for you.
Change in EU Law
Until quite recently there was only one type of tooth whitener on the market that really worked, being hydrogen peroxide based. This has been proven very effective and has been endorsed by many professional bodies as to its effectiveness.
However late 2011, the EU passed a change in the legislation prohibiting the sale of peroxide based teeth whitening products except through a qualified dental practice. All suppliers within the EU have until Sept 2012 to make the changes. After that time, it will only be possible to purchase hydrogen peroxide teeth whiteners from outside the EU.
What Is The Difference Between Both Type Products
It is important however to take a look at the difference between the two products to see which is the most suitable for you.
Hydrogen Peroxide Teeth Whitening
Hydrogen peroxide has been used for teeth whitening for many years now and you can follow this on how to gargle with hydrogen peroxide and there are a number of hydrogen peroxide teeth whitening kits available that you can easily purchase, such as Smile 4 You and Dr Georges Dental White.
There have however been a few reports stating that the use of hydrogen peroxide teeth whitening kits can cause your teeth to become sensitive and in extreme cases could burn the inside of your mouth if used in a high concentration. It should be stressed however that this is in very extreme cases and has normally resulted as a direct result of people not following the recommended guidelines.
Sodium Bicarbonate Teeth Whitening
As a result of concerns expressed by the dental profession, the EU made an enhancement to the current legislation regarding the supply of hydrogen peroxide teeth whitening kits to the general public. From late 2012, hydrogen peroxide teeth whitening kits will still be available, but only through dental practices.
After this time, the only effective teeth whitener that can be purchased outside of dental practices is that of Sodium Bicarbonate.
The advantages that sodium bicarbonate has over hydrogen peroxide teeth whitening is that it does not cause sensitivity of the teeth. For a while now, sodium bicarbonate has been available but has not been as effective as hydrogen peroxide.
The manufacturers however claim that as a direct result of adding other natural ingredients to the sodium bicarbonate the effectiveness of it has been greatly increased. These include such products as Mint Cosmetics, Botanical White and Zero Peroxide.
But Which is Best –Hydrogen Peroxide or Sodium Bicarbonate?
Hydrogen peroxide teeth whitening products have been available for many years and within the USA, a major supplier of the product has actually been certified by the FDA for its’ use, which is good news. Results have been very good.
Sodium Bicarbonate on the other-hand is relatively new and results are not so widely known and it has not such a proven track record against that of hydrogen peroxide teeth whitening products.
If you are looking for a proven teeth whitener then personally I would still go for the hydrogen peroxide teeth whitening product, but it must be stressed that the manufacturers guidelines must be strictly adhered to at all times.
If however, you suffer from sensitive teeth, then I would opt for the ‘kinder’ sodium bicarbonate teeth whitener. Again following all manufacturers’ recommendations.
The thing I find strange however, is that although the dental profession have highlighted various concerns, under the new guidelines, they will be the only professional body who can supply the product. Thus making it a monopoly of it’s use!
Time will tell if Sodium based teeth whitening products will be able to provide the same results as hydrogen peroxide teeth whitening products.
